What do a Mexican beauty, a Scottish chauffeur, a British aristocrat, a Russian agent (and his Russian servant), a Monaco art dealer, a Russian oil baron, an Italian used car salesman and a French fisherman have in common ?
They are all involved in an intertwined plot to rig art auctions, smuggle cocaine, and a convoluted attempt to open a new ethnic restaurant - all of which go spectacularly wrong and create "Mayhem in Monte Carlo".
The plot roams from the moors of the Highlands as the lonely chauffeur tries to help his 'lady' to sell her Rolls Royce in Monaco, to the auction houses of Europe where the 'Lady' joins an art ring determined to bump the price of worthless Italian 'kitsch'. Meanwhile, Paz - the Mexican model from book one in the Trilogy, ("The little brown diamond") is lured to Monaco by her former Russian lover to open that Mexican eatery. It is a love that goes very sour as the cocaine snorting Russian slowly loses grip on reality - cocaine, by the way, that his boss is smuggling into Britain in the spare wheel of that Rolls Royce.
The smuggling plot unravels and the Russian Oil Baron has to add murder to his many nefarious occupations. And the body is dumped at sea by the accommodating French fisherman.
This unceremonious dumping is where the plot starts and where the novel ends. In between enjoy watching the characters get on each others nerves, cheat on each other and try and involve the palace.
The author, a veteran international advertising man, knows how to keep the action going, make the reading easy and the characters amusing when they aren't being grisly and sinister.
"It's a good read, fast paced and funny," says a Dutch reviewer. "Even though the twists and
turns can drive you dizzy from time to time !"
We doubt you will get dizzy. But you will enjoy the ride

Interesting and well-developed, international characters keep the action fresh and the reader just one step behind until the last page is turned. This book would make a great movie with an intriguing setting in Monaco, high rollers, schemers, crooks and a few innocent players all contributing their part to a tale having several subplots which have been artfully woven into a written tapestry colored with wit, humor and a devilishly clever plot.
It was fun.

Mayhem in Monte Carlo Orteno Trilogy Book 2 edition by Michael Christopher Ferrier Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Mike Ferrier's latest book 'Mayhem in Monaco' does justice to that famous description of the Principality as a 'sunny place for shady people.' The writer provides metaphorical sun and shade in equal measure.
He brings on a cast of colourful characters and leads them on a merry romp through a maze of plot and subplots. There is the heroine Paz who paradoxically has less oomph than one would expect from a lady of fiery Latin temperament. Then there are the unambiguous baddies one of whom, the rather brutish and boorish Vladimir, surprises by provoking probably misplaced sympathy. More interestingly, the 'good guys' are not in every, or even many, respects, 'good'. In fact, some are decidedly shady. Such as the widowed Lady L. who muscles in on an elaborate art scam and sees no harm in doing a spot of drug-running, Aided and abetted by her chauffeur Hamish, driver of her Rolls-Royce which plays an important part in the story. Hamish, considering his background as law-abiding owner of a rural garage, should have known better. Lady L. herself excites curiosity. Branded a Scottish 'aristocrat', she speaks music-hall Scots (lots of 'ye') and lives in a village in the Central Highlands of Scotland. One would have expected a woman of such wealth, owning at least one priceless masterpiece (and that one a Renoir) to be the mjstress of a grand shooting-lodge. But the author never lifts the veil off her past and so the reader is left pleasurably imagining it. (She is of course a one-time high-class tart, married to an arms manufaturer of shady renown and double her age, who left her a fortune of equally dubious provenance.)
The author knows his Monte Carlo very well. This gives the book a flavour of authenticity which makes for lively reading. It would, however spoil the fun to reveal the ingenious twists and turns of the story. The book would have benefited from rather more rigorous editing. There are too many spelling mistakes; the author's habit of 'translating' foreign phrases irritates slightly and interrupts the flow of the narrative and the dialogue is sometimes too stiff or not crisp enough. But 'Mayhem in Monaco is a thriller which combines excitement and humour. It's a book to read on a deckchair on a warm summer afternoon. Or to provide distraction when you're suffering from a raging toothache. It is also, in its own way, curiously and pleasantly innocent.
Not bad, interesting and a tad different. For me I am a lover of all things Monaco. It didn't set the world on fire but.....
